OUR PATRON

Maualaivao Professor Albert Wendt ONZ, CNZM is widely regarded as the father of contemporary Pacific literature and one of Oceania’s most influential writers, thinkers, educators and cultural visionaries.

Born in Apia, Samoa, in 1939, Albert Wendt traces his heritage to the villages of Malie, Sapapali’i, Lefaga and Vaiala. Over a distinguished career spanning more than six decades, he has transformed the literary and cultural landscape of the Pacific, helping to reshape how Pacific peoples, histories, identities and stories are understood around the world.

A celebrated novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, painter and academic, his groundbreaking works—including Sons for the Return Home, Pouliuli, Leaves of the Banyan Tree and The Adventures of Vela—gave voice to Pacific experiences at a time when Pacific stories were rarely told by Pacific people themselves.

As an educator and scholar, Professor Wendt taught and led across Samoa, Fiji, Hawai’i and Aotearoa New Zealand. He was the first Pacific person appointed Professor in the University of Auckland’s English Department and played a pivotal role in establishing Pacific literature and Pacific studies as respected academic disciplines. Through his writing, teaching and mentorship, he has inspired generations of Pacific writers, artists, scholars and storytellers.

His contributions have been recognised through numerous honours, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement, the Arts Foundation Icon Award, Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM), and the Order of New Zealand (ONZ), the country’s highest civilian honour.

As Patron of Pasifika Fest UK, Professor Wendt continues to champion the importance of Pacific storytelling, creativity and cultural expression, and the vital role they play in connecting Pacific communities across generations and around the world.
